ModeMapping™:
Translating User Needs Into Product Innovation
Are you frustrated by the way your company’s products are designed?

Does the design of these products reflect how they are used and the benefits they deliver?
Do your products solve the needs of their end users?

Most leading companies conduct consumer research as part of their business strategies. The challenge they face is translating this consumer research into meaningful products and services. One methodology for uncovering consumer insights is called ModeMapping™. Developed by Stuart Karten Design (SKD), an award-winning industrial design firm, the tool enables companies to gain a better understanding of the unmet needs that drive successful product design.

In this program, SKD Principal Stuart Karten will explain the ModeMapping™ process and the benefits it provides for firms looking to develop innovative products that offer users fresh solutions. He will also present case studies in which consumer analysis has generated insights for products ranging from automotive interiors to pet food packaging. You will learn:

Ways to successfully incorporate user research into your design process
Strategies for translating customer needs into product concepts
How the design process can help you to excite your customers

Stuart Karten is founder and principal of Stuart Karten Design. Since the firm’s founding in 1984, Stuart and his team of 25 designers, researchers, and engineers have completed projects in the medical device, consumer electronics, transportation, and home appliance industries.

Stuart is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. He worked for Gould Medical Products, Mattel, and Baxter Medical Products until founding SKD. He is the former chair of the Los Angeles chapter of the Industrial Designer Society of America and a current member of the advisory board to the USC master’s program in Medical Device and Diagnostic Engineering.

Under Stuart’s leadership, SKD has received more than 90 industrial design awards, and was recently named one of America’s top 5 design firms by Fast Company magazine. SKD is especially renowned for its design of medical devices, including the Zon hearing aid for Starkey Laboratories, which won the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt People’s Design Award in 2008.

July 19 - Art Center Car Classic - By Air, Land and Sea

Art Center Car Classic ‘09
By Air, Land and Sea
Sunday, July 19, 2009
10 AM – 4 PM

Top automotive designers, collectors and enthusiasts at Car Classic ’09 will convene as Art Center once again celebrates vehicles that push the boundaries of design. The Classic brings together 100 rare and exotic vehicles, including classics, sports cars, hot rods and customs, motorcycles, aircraft, watercraft, keynote presentations by world-renowned designers as well as tours of design studios and galleries.

This year’s theme, “By Air, Land and Sea,” celebrates vehicles that push the boundaries of design. To reflect the broadening focus of Art Center’s Transportation Design Department, the College moves beyond the automobile to showcase the best in all types of transportation. The event will focus on the historic relationship between aircraft and watercraft design and the automobile industry.

In keeping with the event’s expanded theme, the keynote address will be delivered by Burt Rutan, the aerospace engineer world-renowned for his designs of the record-breaking aircraft Voyager and SpaceShipOne, winner of the 2004 Ansari X-Prize. Rutan, who is currently preparing to launch the Virgin Galactic spaceline with Sir Richard Branson, opening the doors for sub-orbital space tourism, is scheduled to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from Art Center and General Motors Design at Car Classic ’09. Rutan has long been an inspiration to Art Center students, especially those who visited his aerospace and specialty composites development company, Scaled Composites, as part of their class on materials and methods.

Tickets to Car Classic ’09 are $60 at the door or $50 online. Alumni save $20 online.
Admission is free to all current Art Center students (undergraduate or graduate degree programs), all current faculty (both full- and part-time), and all current staff.
